Nourish: Baguette French Toast

Warm, spiced, and just sweet enough, this French toast is our weekend kind of ritual. Made with thick slices of baguette, dipped in a rich custard infused with cinnamon, orange zest, and vanilla. It’s pan-fried in butter until golden and crisp on the edges, soft and custardy inside. An indulgence best enjoyed slow, with coffee, sun, and the perfect brunch mood.

The brown sugar melts into a gentle caramel as it cooks, adding just the right touch of crunch. Simple, nostalgic, and quietly luxurious—exactly how we like our mornings.

Ingredients

  • Half a baguette, sliced into 2–3 cm thick rounds
  • 3–4 eggs
  • ¾ cup milk of choice
  • 2 tablespoon of brown sugar (plus extra for optional topping)
  • 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon (plus extra for topping)
  • Zest of ½ orange
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • A pinch of nutmeg
  • A pinch of salt
  • 2–3 tablespoons of melted butter (for custard)
  • Butter for frying

Steps

  1. In a bowl, whisk together brown sugar, cinnamon, orange zest, vanilla, nutmeg, salt, and hot melted butter until well combined. Add in the eggs and milk, and whisk into a smooth custard base. Dunk the sliced baguette pieces into the mixture, letting them soak briefly on both sides.
  2. Heat a pan over medium heat and add a knob of butter. Once melted, place the soaked baguette slices in the pan. Cook until golden brown and crisp on both sides, about 2–3 minutes per side. For extra caramelisation, sprinkle a bit more brown sugar and cinnamon directly onto the slices as they cook.
  3. Serve warm. Best with a drizzle of maple syrup, with some icing sugar dusted or simply as they are - comfort in every bite.
